Fireside and steamside performance in biomass power plant

To address the challenge of climate change, energy sector is developing novel strategies to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. One route increase steam temperatures and pressures (above 650°C 350 bar). Another use potential net zero emissions fuels, like biomass. Both these routes cause issues for heat-exchanger materials due differences in composition combustion environments generated, compared coal.This paper characterises candidate superheater/reheater alloys’ behaviour (Sanicro 25 IN740) at 700°C. 1,000 h fireside 10,000 steamside exposures were carried out, first using ‘deposit recoat’ techniques. Sample cross-sections analysed dimensional metrology SEM/EDX. Fireside results Sanicro showed degradation throughout samples’ thicknesses. In exposures, formed a Cr-rich scale, Nb rich particles (z-phase). IN740 lower metal sound damage than oxidation exposures.
